Artificial intelligence is impressive. It can summarize documents, write code, classify images, translate languages, answer questions, and help people work faster in almost every field. Because of that, many people are starting to treat AI as if it were a perfect reasoning engine - something that can replace both human judgment and traditional software logic.
That is where a dangerous misunderstanding begins.
AI is often useful, often convincing, and often correct. But it is not the same thing as a deterministic algorithm. It does not operate like a calculator, a database engine, or a carefully defined accounting rule. And that distinction matters a great deal, especially when we are working with business data, reporting, finance, or any process where small errors can accumulate into larger problems.
The core issue is simple: AI is very good at producing plausible answers, but plausibility is not the same as exactness.
A traditional algorithm follows explicitly defined steps. If the rules are correct and the input is correct, the output is fully controlled and repeatable. That is exactly why we trust algorithms in systems where precision matters. If a formula says 2 + 2 = 4, then the result must be 4 every single time. Not 3.98. Not 4.02. Not “probably 4.” Just 4.
That is how deterministic systems are supposed to work.
AI works differently. It does not “think” in the same strict, mechanical sense as a conventional algorithm. Instead, it predicts the most likely continuation, the most likely classification, the most likely interpretation, or the most likely answer based on patterns it has learned from data. In many situations, this is extremely powerful. But it also means that AI is not naturally designed for absolute certainty.
A good way to understand this is to look at OCR, or optical character recognition.
When OCR reads a letter or a number from an image, the input is often imperfect. The image may be blurry. The text may be slightly damaged. Some pixels may be missing. Part of the character may have a gap in it. Yet OCR can still recognize the symbol correctly because it does not require a perfect shape. It identifies the most probable match. Even when parts of the image are “missing,” the system fills in the gaps based on what is most likely there.
That ability is useful. In fact, it is exactly why AI-like methods are so good at pattern recognition. Humans do something similar all the time. We can read a word even when one letter is partly hidden. We can understand a sentence even when a few words are missing. We infer the intended meaning.
But inference is not the same as calculation.
In OCR, a little bit of guessing is acceptable because the goal is recognition under imperfect conditions. The system is allowed to tolerate ambiguity. It can make the best possible interpretation from incomplete data. In that context, “probably correct” can be good enough.
Now compare that to a calculation or an analytical data process.
If an AI model approaches a calculation with the same pattern-based logic, then it is no longer behaving like a strict mathematical engine. It is behaving like a system that tries to get close to the correct answer. That is why it should not surprise us if an AI system, in principle, treats something like 2 + 2 less as an absolute law and more as a pattern whose answer is overwhelmingly likely to be 4. In that world, a value like 3.98 or 4.02 is “near” the right result, but still wrong.
That example is deliberately simple, but the principle scales.
In everyday conversation, small deviations may not matter. In marketing copy, brainstorming, or early-stage ideation, near-correct is often completely acceptable. In image recognition, language interpretation, or document summarization, approximate reasoning can even be a strength. But in analytical systems, small inaccuracies are not harmless. They tend to compound.
One rounding issue becomes several. One slightly wrong classification feeds another step. One mistaken field mapping influences a KPI. One incorrectly interpreted value affects a trend line. Then the dashboard still looks polished, the report still looks professional, and the summary still sounds convincing - but the logic beneath it has begun to drift away from reality.
That is one of the biggest risks with AI in data work: not dramatic failure, but subtle error propagation.
The most dangerous output is not obviously absurd output. It is output that looks reasonable enough to pass casual inspection.
If a traditional ETL pipeline contains a defect, the defect is usually tied to a rule that can be inspected, tested, corrected, and rerun. There is a traceable logic path. A SQL query can be reviewed. A transformation rule can be versioned. A failed test can reveal the exact break point. Deterministic systems may have bugs, but they also support deterministic debugging.
AI systems are much less transparent in that sense. They may provide an answer that sounds coherent without exposing a precise chain of calculation that can be audited line by line. Even when the answer is correct, the confidence it creates can exceed the true reliability of the method. That gap is especially problematic in business contexts where decision-makers assume that fluent output must be trustworthy output.
This is why AI is not a good replacement for exact analytical processing over large datasets.
If the goal is to transform millions of rows, enforce business rules, calculate financial measures, reconcile balances, or produce audit-ready reporting, then the foundation should still be traditional deterministic technology: databases, SQL, ETL pipelines, data warehouses, rule-based transformations, and validated semantic models. These tools were built for repeatability, precision, and control.
AI can add enormous value — but in the right role.
The best role for AI in data work is not to become the calculator. It is to become the interpreter.
Let the database calculate. Let the data warehouse structure. Let the query engine aggregate. Let the business rules remain explicit and testable. Then let AI help the human understand what the results mean.
That is where AI shines.
AI can help formulate questions. It can generate SQL drafts. It can explain trends in plain language. It can compare alternative interpretations of a result. It can summarize the outcome of a query for a non-technical stakeholder. It can identify possible anomalies worth investigating. It can suggest follow-up questions that a business analyst may want to ask next.
In other words, AI is very strong at working on top of data, but far less trustworthy when it replaces the exact logic that produces the data.
A sensible architecture follows this principle. Instead of asking AI to perform the analytical computation itself, we should let it access data through controlled queries. The exact calculations should happen in systems designed for exactness. AI should then interpret the final result set, explain it, translate it into business language, and support human decision-making.
That approach combines the strengths of both worlds.
Traditional data systems provide rigor. AI provides flexibility.
Traditional logic guarantees that totals, joins, filters, and measures behave as defined. AI makes those results easier to explore, understand, and communicate. Traditional systems reduce ambiguity. AI helps humans navigate complexity.
This separation of responsibilities is not a limitation. It is good design.
It also reflects a broader truth about technology: tools should be used according to their nature.
A hammer is excellent at driving nails. It is not a flaw that it is poor at cutting wood. A microscope is powerful for magnification, but useless for weighing a truck. The problem begins when we are so impressed by a tool that we start assigning it tasks it was never meant to do with certainty.
That is what sometimes happens with AI.
Because AI can appear intelligent, people begin to assume it is also precise. Because it can produce polished language, they assume it is logically rigorous. Because it often gets the answer right, they assume it will reliably do so at scale, under pressure, across messy real-world data, with no drift, no compounding errors, and no hidden assumptions.
That assumption is too optimistic.
AI should be treated as a probabilistic assistant, not as an infallible calculation engine.
That does not make AI weak. Quite the opposite. It makes AI extremely valuable - once we stop expecting the wrong thing from it.
The real opportunity is not to force AI into the role of a deterministic processor. The real opportunity is to use AI where probabilistic intelligence is actually beneficial: language, interpretation, pattern recognition, summarization, contextualization, and human-facing explanation.
When precision is mandatory, use exact systems.
When meaning must be explained, use AI.
That simple distinction can prevent many expensive mistakes.
As AI adoption grows, organizations will increasingly need to decide where trust belongs in their data architecture. The winning approach will not be “replace everything with AI.” It will be “use AI where approximation is useful, and use deterministic systems where correctness must be guaranteed.”
That is the mature view.
AI is often right. Sometimes impressively right. But “often right” is still not the same as “always exact.” And in data, finance, reporting, and analytics, that difference is everything.
So the question is not whether AI is useful. It clearly is.
The real question is this: should AI calculate your business truth, or should it help you understand truth that has already been calculated correctly?
For most serious analytical work, the answer should be clear.
AI should interpret data, not calculate it.
